Knox County TNCEP

Welcome to the Knox County TNCEP Program website!!!

About Us

The Tennessee Nutrition and Consumer Education Program (TNCEP) is designed to provide nutrition education to Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP) participants and eligible participants in Tennessee. Nutrition education is also provided to Knox County schools that receive 50% or more in free - reduced meals. It is administered by the University of Tennessee Extension and funding comes from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through the Tennessee Department of Human Services (DHS).

The Knox County TNCEP Program delivers nutrition education to eligible families in Knox County
. Nutrition education can take many forms. Classes, single sessions, exhibits, and handouts are some ways we reach our audience. Families are reached at various locations including the DHS office, various public housing sites, commodities distribution sites, in after school programs and in eligible Knox County Schools.

Facts:

Knox County has the third highest number of SNAP recipients in Tennessee.  According to the TN Department of Human Services, as of July 2009 over 54,000 individuals in Knox County, representing almost 26,500 families, receive a total of over $7,000,000 in food stamps on a monthly basis. According to the USDA May 2009 the state of Tennessee recorded about 1,090,387 individuals that participate in the SNAP program. The number of individuals increased by 19.7% from May 2008 participants.

Goal:

To reach this audience of individuals and and families with positive nutrition messages that bring about positive, lasting behavior change in their lives. We aim to equip and empower participants with research-based knowledge about nutrition and physical activity.  We then want them to apply the new knowledge and make better eating choices because of what they have learned.

We invite you to become involved in our program.  If you serve the audience that we are reaching out to or low-income families in the area, please contact us to see if we can work together.
